What is Invisalign®? An Overview
When a patient gets traditional braces to straighten their teeth or correct other bite-related issues, a series of small metal brackets are affixed to each tooth. Those brackets are then connected together via a metal wire and the strength of said wire helps slowly "pull" each tooth into its desired position over time.
Invisalign®, on the other hand, is something totally different. It uses a series of small, virtually invisible, totally removable and incredibly comfortable plastic aligners that are made to the precise dimensions of your teeth using 3D computer imaging. Every few weeks, you swap out one set of aligners for another - thus continuing to move your teeth into their desired position and unlock that perfect smile you've always wanted.
Not only is Invisalign® far more comfortable than traditional braces, but most people won't even realize that you're wearing them - thus making it by far the most discreet way to address any dental-related problems you may have, too.
Why Would I Want Invisalign®? Let Us Count the Ways
Because traditional braces are always in your mouth, there are certain types of food you will be unable to eat for the duration of your treatment. Anything that can get stuck in between the wires and/or the brackets, or that could damage either one of them, is always not recommended.
Because Invisalign® aligners are removable, on the other hand, there are no such dietary restrictions to speak of. All you have to do is pop them out before a meal, enjoy whatever food and drink you'd like, and pop them back in when you're done.
Maybe the biggest advantage that people get when they choose Invisalign® over traditional braces has to do with the comfort level they can enjoy. Traditional braces have come a long way in the last decade, but you're still talking about a series of metal brackets and wires being in your mouth at all times. Because of the sophisticated 3D imaging and related technology used during Invisalign treatment, on the other hand, the aligners themselves almost act as a second set of skin to your teeth.
This means that not only are they very comfortable, but they're also incredibly effective as well!
Typically, the total treatment time of Invisalign® lasts between nine and 15 months - although your specific situation will obviously dictate just how long you have to wear them. All this, and you get a solution that works out to be roughly the same cost as traditional braces, too.
Because any adjustments are made to the aligners and NOT to brackets or wires, most people also enjoy the fact that their trips to the orthodontist take far less time with Invisalign®. You'll still need to make regular checkup appointments to make sure everything is proceeding as it should be, but you'll be in and out before you know it.
